Why taking a break is Powerful for Your Self Worth
Jun 09, 2026Why Taking a Break Is One of the Most Powerful Things You Can Do
Hello Queen,
It has been a little while, and I wanted to check in.
Firstly, welcome to everyone who is new to The Self Worth Secret community. It brings me so much joy to know that women from all over the world are joining this journey of self discovery, healing, and self worth.
I've been a little quieter than usual recently, and today I felt called to share why.
A little while ago, the universe forced me to take a break.
Over the past eight months, I have experienced some incredibly beautiful moments, alongside some deeply heartbreaking ones. In the coming weeks and months, I will share more about that journey. But for now, there is one lesson that feels important enough to share today.
The lesson is this:
You are allowed to take a break.
Without explanation.
Without guilt.
Without feeling like you have to justify your need for rest.
For many women, myself included, this can feel incredibly uncomfortable.
When I stepped back, my mind immediately began asking questions:
Who am I letting down?
What if people think I've failed?
What if they think I'm weak?
I've done a lot of healing work over the years, but the truth is that healing doesn't make us immune to being human. Our core wounds can still be triggered. For me, one of those wounds is the belief that I must constantly be doing, giving, helping, or achieving in order to be worthy.
Perhaps you can relate.
The Challenge of Being Instead of Doing
Learning to stop "doing" and start "being" isn't easy.
When we slow down, our minds often become louder.
They jump from thought to thought, creating stories, doubts, fears, and worries. They make us question ourselves and feel uncomfortable in the stillness.
But often, it is within that stillness that the deepest healing begins.
Because when the distractions fade away, we are finally able to hear ourselves again.
How Do You Know When You Need a Break?
Your body and mind are usually communicating with you long before burnout arrives.
You may feel:
- Emotionally drained
- Burnt out
- Overwhelmed
- Anxious
- Irritable
- Angry or frustrated
- Disconnected from yourself
- Constantly exhausted
For me, these feelings are often an invitation.
A gentle whisper from my body asking me to pause.
To rest.
To breathe.
To stop pushing.
Whether that means taking one minute, five minutes, an afternoon, a day, or even longer, trust yourself enough to honour what you need.
The Healing That Happens When We Pause
Some of the greatest periods of growth in my life have happened when I was forced to stop.
Sometimes it came through illness.
Sometimes through burnout.
Sometimes through heartbreak.
Sometimes through life completely turning upside down.
Looking back, many of those experiences happened because I wasn't truly listening to myself or my body.
But healing accelerated when I stopped resisting the lessons and started integrating them into my everyday life.
Not just during the crisis.
But afterwards.
When life returned to normal.
The Power of Self-Compassion
One of the most important practices I've embraced recently is self-compassion.
Being kind to myself.
Allowing myself to rest.
Allowing myself to heal.
Allowing myself to stop explaining why.
Because life can feel incredibly hard at times.
And if you don't learn to love and care for yourself first, you will continue pouring from an empty cup until there is nothing left to give.
Self-compassion isn't weakness.
It's wisdom.
It's recognising that you are human.
It's understanding that your worth isn't determined by your productivity.
It's choosing to treat yourself with the same kindness you so freely give to everyone else.
Journal Prompts for Reflection
Take a few moments today to reflect on these questions:
1. Where in my daily life do I feel the need to over-explain myself?
2. Where am I over-giving and neglecting my own needs?
3. How do I truly feel in my mind and body today?
4. Where am I carrying guilt about not being enough or doing enough?
Allow yourself to answer honestly, without judgement.
Awareness is often the first step towards healing.
A Gift for You
This is one of the reasons I created my Self-Compassion Activation Ritual.
It's a guided meditation designed to help you reconnect with the loving, compassionate energy that already exists within you.
A reminder that you are worthy of the same love, care, and understanding that you offer everyone else.
Take some time for yourself and experience it here:

Coming Home to Yourself
This journey isn't about becoming someone new.
It is about remembering who you have always been.
It is about peeling back the layers of conditioning, people-pleasing, perfectionism, and self-abandonment.
It is about coming home to yourself.
So be patient.
Be gentle.
Be kind to yourself.
You deserve that too.
Because when you finally make this journey about you, everything begins to transform.
With love,
Sarah Jayne
